In a stunning development that has left fans reeling, Maurice Benard, the actor who has portrayed Sonny Corinthos on General Hospital for over three decades, announced his retirement this August.
This marks the end of an era for the beloved character and a significant shift in the long-running soap opera’s landscape.
Maurice Benard first joined General Hospital in 1993, quickly becoming a fan favorite as the complex and charismatic mob boss, Sonny Corinthos.
Over the years, Benard’s portrayal of Sonny earned him critical acclaim, including multiple Daytime Emmy Awards.

In a heartfelt message to his fans, Benard expressed his gratitude for the support he has received throughout his career. “Playing Sonny Corinthos has been one of the greatest honors of my life,” he said. “The journey has been incredible, and I am deeply thankful to everyone who has been a part of it. It’s time for me to step back and explore new opportunities, but I will always cherish my time on General Hospital.”

The silver lining to all the rumors is that it appears as if Benard is not leaving the soap, anytime soon. After all, there’s been no announcement in this regard from either the show or the actor.
Benard has mentioned that if he did leave GH, he’d focus on his State of Mind podcast, full-time. He explains, “There’s less pressure here for me, and I can still work with mental health. I don’t know when, but soon enough, I’ll be done with (GH). Sorry. I hate to say that, but it’s the truth.”
Maurice Benard entered the role of Sonny Corinthos in 1993. Before that, he worked on All My Children from 1987 to 1989 playing Nico Kelly.
During his tenure with GH, Benard has earned nine Daytime Emmy nominations in total and has snagged the statuette on three occasions, once in 2003, 2019, and 2021.
