It would be nice to think that by now, the world would have evolved beyond bigotry and hate. But nope. In 2024, the world remains a raging dumpster fire, one in which a young Black woman can be viciously disparaged for… for simply existing.

Recently, General Hospital leading lady Tabyana Ali responded to the online attacks with more grace than we could possibly have mustered up. “To anyone that hates me, that’s absolutely fine,” she tweeted. “I don’t know you and you don’t me, but regardless I’m sending you peace, safety, and prosperity… I also pray you touch some grass, see the sun, eat a delicious meal and find something to do.”

Ali added that “we cannot stoop to rude/racist people’s level. It doesn’t help. We are fighting too many wars as it is.”

True. But that doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t speak up on behalf of the actress and anyone who is the target of bigotry. For our part, it’s infuriating to imagine what Ali must be going through. Here she is, a luminous presence on screen, knocking it out of the park day after day, and instead of just being allowed to savor this moment in her career, she’s being forced to deal with ugliness.

We 100-percent stand with Ali, and so does General Hospital. The soap issued a statement via social media that read: “General Hospital does not tolerate hatred or bigotry of any kind. Racism has no place in Port Charles. General Hospital is for everyone.” Amen.
